This week's management quote

“Conservation is getting nowhere because it is incompatible with our Abrahamic concept of land. We abuse land because we regard it as a commodity belonging to us. When we see land as a community to which we belong, we may begin to use it with love and respect. There is no other way for land to survive the impact of mechanized man, nor for us to reap the esthetic harvest it is capable, under science, of contributing to culture.”
Aldo Leopold (1887-1948) - US environmentalist, founder of the Wilderness Society, author and professor.

Top 10 Ways to Equip Your Car for a Greener Planet
Sometimes it seems as if we, personally, don't have the power to do anything positive for the environment. But the truth is: We can make a difference. It all comes down to the choices we make. Take our vehicles. What we drive, how we drive and how we maintain our vehicles are all choices that are within our control. If you want to make more earth-friendly choices, check out the following ideas before you buy your next car or truck.

Green Power Analysis Tool version 2.0
The Green Power Analysis Tool version 2.0 permits corporate managers to analyze the economic and environmental attributes of one or more green power projects. Through an easy-to-use interface, users can research green power projects of interest and create tables and graphs that analyze green power projects either singly or in combination. Users can input data about their own green power projects or learn more about green power markets by exploring several green power projects pre-installed into the tool. The tool is a Microsoft Excel-based set of spreadsheets developed by the World Resource Institute (WRI) with the assistance of members of the Green Power Market Development Group. Microsoft Excel 2000 or later, on the PC platform, is recommended to run the tool.

Senate Moving Toward Adding Climate Provisions to Energy Bill
Despite opposition from the White House, a growing number of Republicans and Democrats in the Senate want to address global warming, including limits on heat-trapping emissions, as part of the country's broad energy policy. The Senate is schedule to take up energy legislation this week and hopes to finish it this month. Whether to include a measure on climate change will be sharply debated. At least three amendments dealing with climate change are being crafted. Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M., who will shepherd the bill through the floor debate, said he expects climate to be "a very big issue."

California's 'Green' Governor
United Nations World Environment Day on June 1 gave Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger a high-profile platform to burnish his Republican moderate image, and he maximized the spotlight by announcing a bold global warming initiative for California. Plagued by sinking popularity numbers, the governor used his announcement in San Francisco last week to remind Californians that he campaigned on a litany of environmental promises -- and that he's been checking them off.

Director leadership - case studies
On 10 February 2005, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) unveiled a series of case studies that demonstrate the vital role that director leadership has to play in ensuring that risks to health and safety are properly managed. The case studies highlight the benefits that director leadership brings both to the health and safety of the employees and to the business. The case studies compiled by risk management consultants Greenstreet Berman Ltd are drawn from public, private and voluntary sector organisations across a number of industries including construction, education, finance, food production, health services, leisure, local government and retail.

National Association of Manufacturers releases Energy Resource Publication
The National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) just released several energy-oriented resource publications. One of these is entitled Efficiency and Innovation in U.S. Manufacturing Energy Use, a 32-page report written by the Industry Sector staff at the Alliance to Save Energy. This report discusses the forces that shape industrial energy use and the opportunities to create revenue in a high-cost energy environment. The text contains 17 case studies, including the works of many Alliance Associates. You can download a copy of this report from http://www.ase.org/uploaded_files/industrial/NAM.pdf. This report analyses the forces that shape today’s industrial energy markets, while describing strategic approaches to energy management. In addition, the report’s case studies describe the unique energy solutions and opportunities embraced by 17 different corporations of all sizes and across many industries.

You can learn more about these case studies at the NAEM Energy Management Web Seminar on Thursday, June 23rd at 1:00EST.

Have a safe, healthy and environmental week.
