White House Warns Pandemic Flu Could Limit Travel, Food, Water -- article
In the event of a bird flu pandemic, air and ground travel may be limited, and food and water supplies may be disrupted across the United States, according to planning guidelines issued today by the White House. The government advises people to stockpile food and water and plan for a situation in which they will not be able to get to work, school, health care facilities, banks, stores, restaurants, government offices, and post offices. The Implementation Plan released today is an extension of the National Strategy for Pandemic Influenza, announced by President George W. Bush last November. The document warns that a severe pandemic could change the patterns of daily life for some time, saying, "An especially severe influenza pandemic could lead to high levels of illness, death, social disruption, and economic loss."

Carbon Emissions – What Price a Pollution Solution? -- commentary
By most measures, Europe's carbon emissions trading scheme has had a successful start. In its first year -- 2005 -- the scheme transacted a total of 230 million metric tons of CO2, worth about €4 billion. And since January this year, volumes and prices, which reached about €27 a metric ton in March, have been rising steadily. A whole new industry -- of exchanges, brokers, research firms, consultants and publishers -- has been created, seduced by the promise of what is expected to be a multi-billion-euro industry.

Brake on Biofuels as obstacles clog the road -- article

Starbucks: A tale of two brands -- article
Experts say Starbucks could be getting more mileage out of its social responsibility practices outside the US. Starbucks recently released its 2005 corporate social responsibility report. Although the coffee giant is widely acknowledged as a leader in its sector on sustainability issues and reporting, some say it could be doing more to communicate its values and achievements to consumers, especially outside the US.
