The news

BMW, Norsk Hydro Among the World’s Most Sustainable Companiesarticle
In the ninth annual survey of the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes, Norwegian aluminum company Norsk Hydro took the overall top score, while BMW topped the automotive index for the third year running.

Dow Jones Sustainability Index Again Recognizes Abbottarticle
Abbott-the global health care company — was named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index and the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index for the third consecutive year. This selection recognizes Abbott's continued leadership in business, environmental and social performance. "Sustainability is a critical part of our approach to business," said Miles D. White, chairman and chief executive officer, Abbott. "Operating in a way that creates long-term value for our investors and stakeholders is an expectation of leaders across Abbott, from research and development, to marketing and sales, to human resources and environmental management. We’re pleased to be recognized once again as a leader in our industry."

Looking for “Made in the USA’ Labelsarticle
Until recently, Bill Allayaud, who works as a director for the Sierra Club in Sacramento, thought people who checked labels on clothing or toys to make sure they were "Made in the U.S.A." were everything he was not: flag-waving, protectionist, even a little xenophobic. But lately, he said, he is becoming one of them. "Everything I buy now, I look at the label," said Mr. Allayaud, 56, who explained that the "buy American" movement long popular among blue-collar union workers and lunch-pail conservatives - no longer seemed so jingoistic, and was actually starting to come into vogue for liberals like himself who never before had a philosophical problem with Japanese cars or French wine.

Greenhouse Gas Protocol Issues New Guidelines report
The World Business Council for Sustainable Development and the World Resources Institute have released new guidelines for calculating the greenhouse gas emissions benefits of renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. The Guidelines for Quantifying GHG Reductions from Grid-Connected Electricity Projects are based on the GHG Protocol for Project Accounting previously developed by the two organizations. One of the challenges facing project developers and policy-makers alike has been to accurately quantify their GHG emissions benefits, according to WBCSD/WRI. In theory, coming up with the right answer involves complicated modeling of power grids, which is prohibitively costly and impractical, or alternative methods that are overly simplistic and inaccurate.

Insurance Company Making the Most of Climate Changearticle
It is clear that climate change will have ever larger economic ramifications. One Munich-based reinsurance company has already started offering appropriate products.

Innovation Tools & Trends Greenwashing, Be Gone!tools
Yes, you’ve heard of the dangers of greenwashing, or cloaking a product or company in adspeak that screams “natural” or “sustainable” when in fact said product or company might not be as earth-friendly as it may seem. One New York-based ad agency, Green Team Advertising, has come up with a program called the Awakening Audit; the process entails sending an environmental engineer and media strategists to a corporation to see if it’s indeed walking the green walk by maintaining a supply chain that’s truly sustainable.
