The news

Intel Tops List of 100 Best Corporate Citizensarticle
Intel took the number one spot on CRO's 100 Best Corporate Citizens 2008 list, continuing its yearly appearance on the list. The list was started by Business Ethics magazine, but CRO Magazine/TheCRO.com began publishing it in 2007. For the 2008 list CRO worked with research and consulting firm IW Financial to change the methodology behind the rankings, judging corporations based on their climate change, employee relations, environment, financial, governance, human rights, lobbying and philanthropy performance. Some previous categories were renamed, combined or eliminated, and greater weight was given to climate change and environmental issues. Congratulations to our corporate sponsors: Deere & Co., Genentech, ITT, PG&E, Progress Energy, Baxter, Southern Co., Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Target, Motorola, PPL, Eastman Kodak, American Electric Power, Temple-Inland, General Electric, Kraft Foods, and The Coca-Cola Company for making the list!

Electronics in Mexico –IT Errors South of the Borderarticle
Electronics giants are being taken to task in Mexico for failing to protect workers in assembly plants, but one industry giant is setting an example of leadership. Late last year, the Center for Reflection and Action on Labor Issues (Cereal), a non-governmental organization providing legal assistance, labor rights training and organizational support for workers’ groups, released its second annual report examining working conditions in the electronics industry in Mexico.

Finding Value in CSR Reportingcommentary
Three years ago, fresh out of business school and having just accepted a position to lead CSR reporting at Timberland, a fellow MBA asked me how I intended to valuate the time employees spent painting a school during company-sponsored community service time. As the corporate landscape changes and “doing good” is no longer good enough, the challenge is to apply the “return on investment” mindset to the service we do in the community, to protecting human rights in our contract factories and to lessening our impact on the environment.

US Ready for ‘Binding’ Reductions of Greenhouse Gasesarticle
The United States is ready to accept 'binding international obligations' to reduce greenhouse gases, which could be announced as soon as July, a senior White House official has said. 'The US is prepared to enter into binding international obligations to reduce greenhouse gases as part of a global agreement in which all major economies similarly undertake binding international obligations,' said Daniel Price, assistant to US President George Bush for International Economic Affairs.

IBM Study Says Business Seeking Growth through Social Responsibility study
Companies believe that when they are more open with stakeholders and place social responsibility at the core of their business strategy they will be more competitive, attract and retain the best talent, and gain access to new business opportunities, according to a new study released from IBM.

Economics Push Green Technologies report
Technology companies are responding to calls to lessen their environmental impact. In a recent study released from PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC), 40% of technology executives said that "significant market opportunities" are arising from the green movement as consumers ask for more environmentally friendly products.
