Energy Bill Unfinished, but Vote Near
The House is moving toward a vote Friday on energy and climate change legislation, with several significant issues still unresolved but with Democratic leaders expressing confidence that they will muster the votes to pass it.
President Obama endorsed the measure on Tuesday at a White House news conference, calling it “extraordinarily important.” He has sent aides to Capitol Hill to lobby for the bill almost daily and dispatched cabinet officers and senior advisers to a half-dozen states this week to try to drum up public support.
Sears Tower to Be Revamped to Produce Most of Its Own Power
"The Sears Tower... will soon have another unique feature: wind turbines sprouting from its recessed rooftops high in the sky. The building’s owners, leasing agents and architects said Wednesday that they are literally taking environmental sustainability to new heights with a $350 million retrofit of the 1970s-era modernist building — and the turbines are only the tip of the transformation. The plan, to begin immediately, aims to reduce electricity use in the tower by 80 percent over five years through upgrades in the glass exterior, internal lighting, heating, cooling and elevator systems — and its own green power generation."
Dell Earns Top Spot in Inaugural Corporate Sustainability Index Benchmark Report
"Dell took the lead position in its Global Business Sustainability Service's inaugural Corporate Sustainability Index (CSI) Benchmark Report for 2009. With an overall score of 317.9, Dell bested firms such as British Telecom (265.2), IBM (258.5), and Hewlett-Packard (255.1), scoring particularly well in areas of renewable energy, recycling and embedded sustainability strategy. Dell's environmental commitments are bearing fruit and elevating the company to the position of most environmentally progressive IT vendor in the world for 2008."
The Seven Phases of Producing a Sustainability Report
Putting together a successful sustainability report relies on teamwork, support from the top of the company, ample feedback and a healthy dose of introspection. There are seven phases to producing a report, according to “Sustainability Reporting 101: Best Practice Strategies for Successful Reports” a Webinar from Addison, a brand strategy and communications design firm that has produced sustainability reports for companies including ITT, Time Warner and AIG, among others.
How Raytheon's IT Department Helps Meet Green Goals
Corporate sustainability programs that address efficiencies throughout an organization will make the greatest impact over time. Following that premise, Raytheon's sustainability initiative involves a green IT strategy as one of several ways the company is reducing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental impacts. The company has realized its initial greenhouse gas reduction goal, with Raytheon IT delivering measurable environmental and operational improvements as part of the enterprisewide effort.
It’s Now Legal to Catch a Raindrop in Colorado
For the first time since territorial days, rain will be free for the catching here, as more and more thirsty states part ways with one of the most entrenched codes of the West. Precipitation, every last drop or flake, was assigned ownership from the moment it fell in many Western states, making scofflaws of people who scooped rainfall from their own gutters. In some instances, the rights to that water were assigned a century or more ago. Who owns the sky, anyway? In most of the country, that is a question for philosophy class or bad poetry. In the West, lawyers parse it with straight faces and serious intent. The result, especially stark here in the Four Corners area of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah, is a crazy quilt of rules and regulations — and an entire subculture of people like Mr. Bartels who have been using the rain nature provided but laws forbade.
