And now the news

Obama vows to cut regulatory burdens on business - Article
President Barack Obama has promised to ease “absurd and unnecessary paperwork requirements” - and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is not immune. Obama yesterday signed an executive order directing agencies to remove outdated regulations that have a negative impact on the economy.

Voluntary GHG accounting and reporting: Options for climate leadership - Article
The accounting, reporting, verifying and reducing of enterprise greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions makes sense, both for an organization and to help the environment. Quantifying GHG emissions allows a company to better understand and manage these emissions. A company can then implement programs focused on various GHG emission sources to achieve cost savings while reducing the environmental impact of their operations. Proper GHG management requires a good understanding of sources, relative magnitude and variability of emissions. This article is a benefit of Bureau Veritas’ sponsorship of the 2010 EHS Management Forum.

Water issues remain high on the corporate agenda - Article
A new report by the Carbon Disclosure Project has investigated the impact of water scarcity and other water-related issues on the largest companies in water-intensive industries, finding that nearly 40 per cent of companies surveyed are experiencing water problems and nearly 90 per cent have developed water policies, strategies and plans.

Wells Fargo's 5 best practices for engaging your green teams - Article
The banking industry has many challenges on its plate right now. At Wells Fargo, one challenge is how to promote the concept of sustainability to over 278,000 team members (as Wells Fargo calls its employees) and embed sustainability into its operations.

Sustainability-driven spending steadily rising - Survey Review
Despite the effects of the financial crisis, a slow economy in much of the world and continuing inaction by political bodies, the level of business investment in sustainability activities has been steadily rising.
Respondents to the second annual Sustainability & Innovation Global Executive Study - a collaboration between MIT Sloan Management Review and the Boston Consulting Group - also say they expect their spending to grow further in the coming year.

New study reveals the hidden environmental cost of parking - Article
The environmental effects of parking are not just from encouraging the use of the automobile over public transit or walking and biking (thus favoring the often more energy-intensive and polluting mode), but also from the material and process requirements in direct, indirect, and supply chain activities related to building and maintaining the infrastructure.
