And now the news

OSHA announces alignment with globally harmonized system for chemicals - Article
OSHA held a teleconference March 20 to announce the final rule for the long-awaited update to OSHA's Hazard Communication standard that aligns it with the United Nations' Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labeling of Chemicals (GHS). Haz Comm 2012, as it is known at the agency, communicates information about chemical hazards in the workplace “more simply, clearly and effectively,” said Secretary of Labor Hilda L. Solis. It “empowers [workers] with the best information about the chemicals they handle in the workplace,” she added.

Tax, Sustainability Departments' disconnect is 'A missed opportunity' - Article
Many companies could be missing opportunities for financial savings as tax departments and sustainability programs lack integration, according to a survey from Ernst & Young. The lack of involvement by the tax department in the sustainability strategy can result in missed financial incentives for sustainability initiatives.

Should the Chief Sustainability Officer be sustained? - Article
If you take away all the buzz words, isn't sustainability just old-fashioned efficiency? If using less water or fuel saves money, any smart business will do it.  But many business experts say that with increasing natural resource costs, regulation and public scrutiny, companies today need to go beyond traditional efficiency, and that requires a highranking manager with a specific mandate—a chief sustainability officer. But is the position really justified?

Executives see worsening work-life imbalance - Article
'I feel compelled to be constantly in touch with my work, including weekends and holidays, but you learn to live with this situation.' Sound familiar? Unfortunately, even though work-life balance is a hot topic, it increasing does not mesh with reality for many senior managers. The problem is that modern communications may allow less time in the office, but compel them to work around the clock.

Use of 'Conflict Minerals' gets more scrutiny from U.S. - Article
An iPhone can do a lot of things. But can it arm Congolese rebels? That is the question being debated by a battalion of lobbyists from electronics makers, mining companies and international aid organizations that has descended on the Securities and Exchange Commission in recent months seeking to influence the drafting of a Dodd-Frank regulation that has nothing to do with the financial crisis. Tacked onto the end of that encyclopedic digest of financial reform is an odd provision.

Mushrooms: Great in soups, salads and packaging - Article
Featured at NAEM's Corporate Sustainability Management conference, Ecovative showed how they are able to create cushioning for products ranging from Dell Inc. servers to furniture for Crate and Barrel out of mushrooms. The low-tech bio-tech offers simple and effective ways for manufacturers to green their packaging.
