First FTC "Green Guides" settlement reinforces need for transparency in marketing - Article
Last week, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) approved a final order settling charges that products contained zero volatile organic compounds. The case is the first to apply the FTC's recently revised "Green Guides" and, while it deals with some unique properties associated with the marketing of the products in question, it provides useful guidance for anyone making environmental marketing claims, particularly "free-of" claims.

As recently as a few years ago, broken monitors and televisions were being recycled profitably. The big, glassy cathode ray tubes inside were melted down and turned into new ones. But flat-screen technology has made those monitors and televisions obsolete, decimating the demand for the recycled tube glass used in them and creating what industry experts call a "glass tsunami" as stockpiles of the useless material accumulate across the country.

Reporting to the Corporate HSE Director of Shared Services, this position will be responsible for the direction of all matters related to environmental permitting and compliance globally for the corporation. Essential Duties and Responsibilities of this position include the following; Promotes a culture of continual improvement of work processes for reducing health, safety, and environmental risks to ensure a workplace and project where No One Gets Hurt, Nothing Gets Harmed, Lead and support a team that designs and supports environmental management system procedures, operational controls, and work instructions globally for the corporation, Support a team that designs environmental training and competence assurance material based on HSE policies, procedures, operational controls, and work instructions for employees, HSE auditors, HSE Management Reps, and Plant Managers. Other duties may be assigned. Required education a Bachelor's degree in engineering/science (e.g. environmental science, industrial hygiene, mechanical, chemical, occupational safety and health sciences). Qualifications include 6+ years strong experience in an environmental compliance role supporting multiple facilities and projects, preferably within a global manufacturing environment, 3+ years experience managing an environmental compliance staff, Thorough knowledge of EPA, DOT, and local laws, regulations, codes, standards, and best industry practices for environmental compliance and best practices, Industrial hygiene (IH) experience preferred.

Director of Environmental Affairs, Consentium Search; Charlotte, NC
The incumbent is responsible to manage the global environmental risks and liabilities including, but not limited to, site audit, investigation and remediation; designing and implementing global environmental policies and programs; serve as Environmental Affairs Subject Matter Expert (SME) to the corporation as a whole and individual business units. Major responsibilities include designing, developing and directing global environmental policies, programs and systems to ensure regulatory compliance and minimize risks and liabilities, environmental budget management, directly or indirectly managing all company site audit, investigation and remediation projects, directly or indirectly managing outside consultants and legal counsel. Minimum Requirements include a Bachelor's Degree in engineering, chemistry or related discipline, 20 or more years of experience leading environmental affairs in a corporate environment, Five (5) or more years of experience in environmental consulting, preferably on a global basis and a demonstrated success designing, developing and conducting environmental auditing programs. Preferred Qualifications include a Master's Degree in Environmental Engineering or related discipline.

EH&S Director, Confidential Company, Houston, TX
A strong, growing specialty chemical company headquartered in Houston, Texas looking for an energetic leader in Environmental Health and Safety. Our organization is multi-national, expanding and growing quickly and looking for leaders to drive our EH&S process growth and improvement. Successful candidate will be an experienced EH&S professional that is capable of leading functional, specific plant programs and rollouts, while focusing on the strategic direction of the company's Environmental Health and Safety direction. Responsibilities include leading air approval projects through the preparation of permit (NSR, Title V, PSD, PBR, Standard) applications and agency negotiations to ensure optimal permit conditions, frequently working with consultants, benchmarking and improving training program of employees, including new hire orientations, on QHSE requirements to ensure compliance with regulations, coordinating QHSE inspections and audits of equipment and facility to make sure they meet company and regulatory compliance, developing site audit protocols, conducting annual Site Safety Audits, reviewing plant associated inspections, training and safety documentation ensuring that they are in alignment with company policies. A Bachelors Degree in Engineering is required (Chemical Degree is preferred), previous experience in EH&S and Process Safety Management is required.

Director, Environmental Sustainability, Nielson, Chicago, IL.
The Director, Environmental Sustainability will lead Nielsen's global environmental sustainability efforts. Working with teams across our operations and informed by stakeholder expectations and Nielsen materiality, they will identify and manage environmental opportunities that reduce or limit our environmental impact, deliver cost savings and help Nielsen continue to exceed stakeholder expectations in this area. Responsibilities include managing and improving Nielsen's environmental impact inventory process to measure our environmental footprint for the purpose of prioritization and reporting, directing local Green Teams recently established in Nielsen's largest offices to prioritize, execute and promote sustainability initiatives from bottom up and top down, prioritize and support the execution of environmental cost projects with cross-functional teams including Infrastructure, Strategic Sourcing, Global Real Estate. A Bachelors degree along with 5+ years professional experience is required. Familiarity with environmental sustainability reporting frameworks and organizations including the Carbon Disclosure Project and the Global Reporting Initiative is preferred.
